VC IUST inaugurates two-day workshop organized by Department of Mathematical Sciences

AWANTIPORA: A two-day regional workshop on “Research and Opportunities was inaugurated at IUST today. The workshop is organized by the Department of Mathematical Sciences IUST in association with Indian Women and Mathematics (IWM) with the objective to encourage mathematical study and research among youth especially young women.

The program is funded by National Board of Higher Mathematics, India.

Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice Chancellor, IUST was the Chief Guest of the event and Prof. Manzoor A Malik, Dean Academic was the Guest of Honour. Besides, Prof. Amber Habib, Convener Scientific Committee and Prof. Fozia Qazi, Convener Local Organizing Committee who were present at the inaugural session Prof. B. Sury (ISI, Bangalore), Prof. Kanchan Jain (Panjab University), Prof. Pooja Singla (IIT Kanpur), Prof. Sumita Sarkar (University of Calcutta), Prof. Punita Batra (Harish- Chandra Research Institute) and Prof. Mausumi Bose (ISI Kolkata) will be interacting with the participants during the workshop.

Highlighting the importance of mathematics in all scientific fields, Prof. Romshoo spoke about the contributions of women mathematicians like Hypatia, Sophie Germain and Maryam Mirzakhani. He complemented the department for organizing the event and encouraged students to study mathematics from an early age.

Appreciating department’s outreach activities for promoting mathematical study Prof. Malik, spoke about the importance of such sensitization campaigns to enhance student’s interest in the mathematic programs as this significant subject is witnessing decline in enrolment.

Dr. Peer Bilal Ahmad, Head Department of Mathematical Sciences presented the overview of the program and said that we are all surrounded by a mathematical world, as this subject has a huge scope in every field of our life, such as medicine, engineering, finance, natural science, economics, etc.

Interacting with the participants, Prof. Fozia Qazi and Prof. Amber Habib talked about the applications of the subject in the real-life, and emphasized on the need to learn the subject. They also spoke about the recent research in the subject and role of international financial organizations like IWM. The workshop will include invited talks, poster sessions and a panel discussion.

The inaugural session was moderated by Dr. Bilal Para and Dr. Mohd. Younis presented a vote of thanks.
