NEW DELHI: The CBI arrested an Enforcement Directorate (ED) official for allegedly taking a bribe of 20 lakh from a Mumbai-based jeweller here late last night. The suspect, who was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe, has been identified as Sandeep Singh Yadav.
According to the CBI, Yadav, who previously worked with the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), was appointed as the assistant director with the ED in May last year.
The CBI said the ED conducted searches on the jeweller’s premises on August 3 and 4. Later, Yadav allegedly threatened to arrest the jeweller’s son if he did not pay him ~25 lakh.
As per officials, the CBI received a complaint following which a trap was laid to nab the official red-handed. The ED said, “The agency initiated action against Sandeep under the PMLA and ECIR. A search operation was conducted at his residence on Thursday to collect evidence.” A joint team of the CBI and the ED also conducted searches at his office.
“Action has also been initiated to place him under suspension and facilitate his repatriation to his parent department,” the officials said.
