Supreme Court reserves verdict on pleas related to LMV driving licence

NEW DELHI: A five-judge Constitution Bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud today reserved its verdict on petitions raising a legal question that whether a person holding a driving licence for a light motor vehicle (LMV) is legally entitled to also drive a transport vehicle with an unladen weight not exceeding 7,500 kg.

The legal question gave rise to several disputes over payment of claims by insurance companies in accidents involving transport vehicles being driven by those possessing licences to drive LMVs.

The insurance firms alleged that the Motor Accident Claims Tribunals (MACTs) and courts had been passing orders asking them to pay insurance claims, disregarding their objections with regard to the LMV driving licence.
