JAMMU: Eco club of Padma Shri Padma Sachdev College for Women, in collaboration with Department of Environmental Sciences and Paryavaran Sarankshan Gatividhi (Jammu Kashmir Prant) today organised a lecture to celebrate Earth Day covering this year theme “Invest in Our Planet”.
The event was held under the guidance of the College Principal, Prof. Minu Mahajan,
Dr. Harjeet Kaur, Convenor, Eco club delivered a formal welcome speech. She briefed that the motive of organising this event was to raise awareness on changing climatic conditions and to look upon the ways to protect our planet Earth from further damages.
Prof. Minu Mahajan applauded the initiatives taken by the organising team to sensitize and motivate students about various environmental issues like global warming, deforestation etc. She stressed on the need to utilize the existing resources with a sustainable approach.
Kuldeep Sharma, Retired HOD, SKUAST, Jammu, Pravaran Sangrakshak Gatividhi, JK Prant was the resource person of the event. He elaborated on the historical background of the need for celebrating ‘Earth Day’, which started way back in 1970.
“The degrading environmental conditions have a direct impact on the physical, social, mental and spiritual health of an individual” he said. He sensitised the students about the contribution they can make as a student and as a citizen for the welfare of the whole society. He encouraged them to plant at least 7-8 plants per year and also to work on reducing their carbon footprints. The event was witnessed by around 80 students. Dr. Rahul Sharma, Prof. Eisha Gohil, Prof. Shivani Sawhney, Prof. Swarn Singh, Dr. Ravinder Kumar also graced the occasion with their presence.
The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Suraj Mohani Jamwal. The proceedings of the event were conducted by Mehak Sharma and Neharica Sharma (2nd sem).
Meanwhile, to commemorate National Pet Day an extension lecture on the “Safety of our Furry friends” was organised by the department of Home Science to celebrate the joy that pets bring into our lives and to raise awareness about the importance of animal welfare.
Dr. Jasleen Kour, Veterinary Microbiologist, SKUAST-Jammu was the resource person on the occasion.
More than 100 students of the college attended the lecture which shed light on different welfare issues encountered around us regarding animals and what can be done to reduce their effects. The resource person also stressed upon general management measures and steps that should be taken in order to keep pets healthy and what all should be done when they are not keeping well.
Earlier, the event started with a welcome address by Dr. Irvinder Kour, HOD Home Science, who formally welcomed the Chief Guest Prof. Minu Mahajan the revered Principal of the college, the resource person, staff, and students.
Speaking on the occasion, the Principal congratulated the efforts of the department and stressed upon the fact that Pets can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and boost your mood. The whole event was organised by Dr. Anjali Bhat, Prof. Neelam Bhagat, Dr. Ramandeep kaur, Dr. Neelima Gupta faculty of the Department of Home Science . Vote of thanks was given by Prof. Shivani Sawhney. Present on the occasion was staff secretary Prof. Mala Bhasin and other staff members of the college.
