Srinagar: The workers of the National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday gave the slip to police and came out on the streets in Srinagar to register their protest against the Delimitation Commission’s proposals.
As the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) had already decided to hold a peaceful protest in Srinagar on January first, the police on Saturday prevented the senior leaders of the regional parties constituting PAGD from coming out of their houses and were put under house arrest.
Leaders like Dr Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, M Y Tarigami and others were already detained in the homes by police to sabotage the scheduled protest.
However, the workers of NC and PDP managed to come out on streets in Srinagar and clamoured for the restoration of Articles 370 and 35A. They also raised slogans to ‘resolve the Kashmir issue.’
Later, the swarm of NC and PDP workers steered their protest from the General Post Office, Srinagar, towards the Ghanta Ghar.
“Despite the despotic administration’s attempts to foil our protests, PDP & NC workers managed to hit the streets in Srinagar today to raise their voice against the illegal revocation of Article 370. I salute their courage & resolve,” tweeted PDP Chief Mehbooba. (KNB)
