NEW DELHI: Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan voiced serious concerns over the adverse impact of development activities on the environment in the Himalayan region. Speaking during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, she highlighted the increasing frequency of natural disasters and attributed them to unscientific development practices.
“The rising number of landslides, cloudbursts, forest fires, drying water sources and rapid soil erosion in the Himalayan region are extremely alarming,” Ranjan said. Ranjan urged the government to prioritise the protection of the Himalayan region. “We need to protect the Himalayas, not commercialise them,” she asserted.
