Traffic awareness shared duty of every citizen: SSP

SRINAGAR: To generate awareness and sensitise the citizenry regarding traffic rules and proper driving behaviour through a series of awareness programmes, the office of the Programme Coordinator, National Service Scheme, Kashmir University in collaboration with the J&K Traffic Police and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Srinagar Thursday inaugurated a weeklong traffic awareness programme at the Sports Complex, Polo Ground, Srinagar.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Srinagar City, Muzaffar Ahmad Shah; Regional Transport Officer, Kashmir, Syed Shahnawaz; Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Srinagar City, Tariq Ahmad Wani; Deputy Director, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Srinagar,  Hakim Abdul Aziz attended the flag-off ceremony of the week-long event, scheduled from January 11 to January 17.

During the inaugural function, the participants undertook a pledge to abide by the traffic rules. The pledge was administered by the Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Srinagar City, Tariq Ahmad Wani.

One of the highlights of the event was the launch of a massive signature campaign to generate awareness about the importance of the traffic rules.

The NSS volunteers shall be deputed at specific traffic points with to sensitise commuters and drivers about the traffic rules especially the importance of wearing seatbelts, safety helmets, not using the mobile phones while driving and giving way to fire tenders and ambulances. Besides, stressing upon the merits of parking vehicles at designated parking lots and driving with a valid licence and other important documents.

Officers, volunteers and students also participated in the flag-off ceremony.

In her message, Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University, Prof Nilofer Khan, said that the university is committed to encourage a culture of responsible road use and traffic awareness.

“The awareness week aims to instil a sense of responsibility among citizens. Let us pledge to abide by traffic rules, prioritise safety and create a conducive environment for everyone on the roads,” Prof Khan said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Srinagar, Muzaffar Ahmad Shah underscored the role of public awareness in curbing traffic violations and promoting a culture of responsible driving.

“Traffic awareness is not just a responsibility of law enforcement but a shared duty of every citizen,” he said.

NSS volunteers actively participated in the rally, carrying banners and placards advocating safe driving practices.

The event also witnessed the participation of NSS volunteers and programme officers from various other educational institutions.
