NEW DELHI: The uproar for action against Home Minister Amit Shah is getting louder with the Left parties joining the chorus of parties demanding Shah’s resignation for the disrespect allegedly shown by him to BR Ambedkar.

Leaders of five Left parties met here on Sunday and decided to organise nation-wide protest on December 30 demanding resignation of Shah.

A joint statement issued by the parties today said, “Consequent to the disrespectful and derogatory comments on BR Ambedkar by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha, there has been widespread anger and protests across the country. However, neither Amit Shah nor Prime Minister Narendra Modi are willing to own up the responsibility and take remedial action.”

“The Left parties, therefore, decided to continue with the ongoing protests and have decided to jointly organise a protest day on December 30. The nationwide protest day will demand the resignation of Amit Shah as the Home Minister,” the statement added.

The demand for resignation of Shah first raised by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is also set to be a central focus of the extended Congress Working Committee meeting slated to be held at Belgaum in Karnataka on December 26. On the next day, a public meeting will be organised by Congress at Belgaum. Kharge will press the demand of Shah’s resignation once again during the two-day programme of the party in Karnataka.

The TMC also on Monday staged protests across West Bengal voicing opposition to Amit Shah’s controversial remarks involving B R Ambedkar. The rallies held between 2 pm and 3 pm at various locations saw the involvement of several ministers and party loyalists.

Protesters carried flags, placards, and chanted slogans against Shah.

While replying to the discussion on Constitution in the Rajya Sabha on December 18, Shah spoke sarcastically about the repeated uttering of Ambedkar’s name by Congress party and remarked that Congress could have got heavenly rewards if it had taken the name of God as many times. Shah has since tried to wriggle out of the tangle by claiming that AI generated video of him giving the speech was being circulated on social media platforms.
