KU VC inaugurates 5-day workshop on ‘Science-Policy-Society Interface’

Srinagar: Vice-Chancellor University of Kashmir Prof Nilofer Khan Monday inaugurated a workshop on ‘Science-Policy-Society Interface’.

The five-day workshop has been organised by the varsity’s Department of Environmental Sciences in collaboration with Government Degree College for Women, Sopore. It is sponsored by SERB-DST under its Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) programme.

In her presidential address, Prof Nilofer said the role of higher educational institutions is “rapidly changing” with the implementation of the National Education Policy-2020.

Saying that academics need to “reorient” themselves to the “changing times”, the Vice-Chancellor said that Kashmir University is ever-determined to produce knowledge and research that benefits the society at large.

She complimented the Department of Environmental Sciences for holding the collaborative workshop that aims to widen the University’s connect with the society and policy planners.

Dean Academic Affairs Prof F A Masoodi, who was a guest of honour, said the applicability of scientific advancements remains a “big concern” in academia which can be addressed by collaborative endeavors like the present workshop.

He said the research today needs to be “remodeled” such that it suits the present and future requirements of the society.

Dean School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Prof Shamim A Shah underlined the need to take the research outcome in academic institutions “to the logical end” to enable “knowledge transfer from labs to the field.”

Earlier, Head of the Department Prof Fayaz Ahmad Bhat delivered the welcome address, while Dr Sami-ullah Bhat, Organising Secretary, gave the introductory remarks about the DST’s SSR programme.

Dr Showkat Subhan Mir from GDC Sopore delivered the vote of thanks, while Dr Moieza Ashraf conducted proceedings of the inaugural session.
