SRINAGAR: In a significant step towards enhancing the quality of life for artisans in the Kashmir Valley, the Government of Jammu & Kashmir, in partnership with the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation and HELP Foundation, has launched a comprehensive eye care program aimed at providing 15,000 artisans across the valley with essential eye care services. By providing vision care to these artisans – some of whom are receiving vision screenings for the first time in their life – livelihoods and well-being can be transformed for the better.

The program will offer free eye examinations conducted by a team of qualified professionals, addressing the eye health needs of artisans, fisherfolk, and students within the community. Glasses will be dispensed to those in need. At the same time, the program will raise awareness about the importance of eye health and establish a framework for continuous monitoring and support for individuals with chronic eye conditions, ensuring ongoing care and sustainable health outcomes.

Anurag Hans, Head of Mission at EssilorLuxottica and President of the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation said, “At the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, we believe everyone deserves access to quality eye care. We are dedicated to improving vision health for communities in need. By providing artisans in Jammu & Kashmir with good vision, we will empower them to continue their craft with confidence, not only preserving the state’s cultural heritage but also fostering economic independence and long-term empowerment. Through this initiative, we are building resilience, nurturing skills and enabling these communities to thrive with pride and self-reliance.”

Nighat Shafi, Chairperson, HELP Foundation added, “We are excited to collaborate on this important initiative, which addresses a critical gap in healthcare for artisans in the Kashmir Valley. By providing essential eye care, we are helping to preserve their livelihoods and promote sustainable development within these communities.”

The program will be implemented in phases, starting with community assessments and mobilisation in Srinagar, Bandipora, Baramulla, and Budgam. Trained healthcare professionals will perform detailed eye screenings and provide immediate interventions. Educational workshops will also be held to increase awareness of eye health and prevention. Follow-up care for individuals with chronic conditions will be provided, ensuring long-term support and health monitoring.
