IIT Jammu hosts Orientation Program for fresh cohort of PG, PhD students

JAMMU: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu, a revered institution known for its academic excellence and innovation, marked the commencement of the academic year 2023 with an invigorating orientation program for its fresh cohort of M.Tech and Ph.D students.

Prof Manoj Singh Gaur, Director of IIT Jammu, graced the occasion with his presence, and in his characteristic motivational style, urged the students to “Dream Big, Work Hard, and Stay Humble.” His speech resonated with the essence of perseverance and humility required for meaningful success in the academic and professional journey.

A luminary in the academic sphere, Prof Gaur provided invaluable insights into the holistic vision of the institute. He emphasized the unwavering importance of grasping fundamental principles, even amidst the rapid strides of technology. In his address, he said, “Never forget the basics; they serve as the foundation for your pursuits.”

The highlight of the ceremony was Prof Gaur’s discourse on the concept of Anti-Fragility. He urged the students to embrace the challenges and adversities they encounter, as these are the crucibles that forge strength and resilience. “Thriving on chaos and becoming stronger in the face of stress is a hallmark of true success,” he emphasized, encouraging the young minds to adapt and excel.

Speaking of startup initiatives and internship opportunities, Prof Gaur presented the students with a glimpse of the dynamic landscape that awaits them beyond the classroom walls. His insights opened doors to the realm of practical experiences and entrepreneurial avenues.

The program witnessed the gracious presence of other prominent personalities from the institute. Prof Kannan Iyer, the Dean of Academics, elucidated the academic nuances of the M.Tech and Ph.D programs, equipping the students with a comprehensive understanding of their academic journey.

Prof Uma Shankar, the Dean of Student Welfare, extended a warm welcome to all attendees, infusing the event with a sense of camaraderie and community.

The orientation program also showcased the array of co-curricular opportunities that await the students on campus. Dr Ravi Kumar Arun, Associate Dean (AD) of Student Welfare; Dr Sartaj Hasan, AD of Student Activities; Dr Ankit, AD of Sports; and  SK Pareekh, Assistant Registrar of Students Welfare, collectively motivated the students to embark on a holistic journey that encompasses not only academic growth but also personal development.
