Kashmir’s natural beauty poised to attract international adventure sports competitions: Nasir Aslam

SRINAGAR: Advisor to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Nasir Aslam Wani, said on Sunday that the government will open a canoeing and kayaking institution at Manasbal, complete with coaches and other facilities.

Wani highlighted the growing popularity of adventure sports in Kashmir, with increased local participation in major events. This trend underscores the valley ’s potential to host international adventure sports competitions.

Wani noted that recent events combining activities such as hiking, running, swimming, canoeing, and cycling attracted good participation from both local and foreign athletes. “These multi-activity sports are not only adventurous but also a test of endurance, as participants engage in continuous activities for up to 48 hours,” Wani explained.

He praised the local enthusiasm for adventure sports, highlighting the valley’s natural landscapes as an ideal backdrop. “Kashmir offers an excellent environment for adventure sports. The blend of mountains, rivers, and open spaces presents immense opportunities for organizing such events,” he added.

The advisor also shared plans to host a large-scale adventure sports event in Kashmir next June, with the aim of replicating the success of international competitions. “Our team heading to Malaysia is proof of the potential of Kashmiri athletes. We hope they return with a win,” he said.

Wani further stressed the need to improve infrastructure and training facilities for adventure sports in the valley. He mentioned the revival of water sports units under the Sports Authority of India, which will provide specialized coaches and equipment. “These facilities will ensure that our youth have the opportunity to learn and excel in various adventure sports,” he remarked.
