SRINAGAR: To mark the International day against drug abuse & illicit trafficking, the District Administration Srinagar on the directions of the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Mohammad Aijaz Asad organised several Programmes, Rallies and Drawing/Painting Competitions here on Sunday.
The major event was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar and was organised in collaboration with District Youth Services & Sports Department during which a Rally was taken out to aware the general public about the harmful and ill effects of the Drug menace.
The Rally was carried out under the supervision of DYSS Officer, Balbir Singh which started from Youth Hostel Srinagar and after passing through Wazir Bagh, L.D Chowk, Lal Mandi, Presentation Convent Chowk, Jehlum Bund Road and Zero Bridge successfully culminated at Emporium Gardens Srinagar.
The participants including School students and officers/ officials of DYSSO carried banners and play cards and raised slogans against the menace of drugs.
At Emporium Gardens a painting/drawing competition was held on the relevant theme.
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad highlighted the need of mass awareness programs and contribution of Society at large in curbing the menace of substance/drug abuse. He further said that District Administration Srinagar has already launched an initiative “Mission Waapsi” in order to bring back and support the victims so that they can live a normal life again.
The DC also advised the young participants to work actively in their respective schools & Wards to help track the peddlers who are responsible for the growing numbers of drug addicts and substance abuse.
The DC also lauded the efforts of Youth Services & Sports Department, Education Department and Social welfare Department for conducting programmes of huge social importance.
Meanwhile, the School Education Department organized a series of events to observe International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which included major event at Government Girls Higher Secondary School Kothibagh.
Additional District Development Commissioner Srinagar, Zahoor Ahmad Mir, District Social Welfare Officer, Mukhtar Ahmad Dar, Deputy Chief Education Officer, Dr Anjum Raja and Principal GGHSS Kothibagh, Ms.Nusrat Bukhari were present at the function.
During the event Painting Competition, Essay writing Competition and Poster Competition was held.
About 350 students and 100 teachers from various Higher Secondary Schools and High Schools (both government and private) participated in the said competition.
ADDC, Srinagar in his address said that the observance of this day aims to raise awareness about the major problems that illicit drug pose to the society at large. The main focus of organising today’s event is to spread awareness among the students.
DSWO also spoke on the occasion and said participants need to act as ambassadors against the Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in their own locality as there is huge increase in the number of youths consuming Drugs.
The Deputy Chief Education Officer, Ms. Anjum Raja in her welcome address appreciated the efforts of District Administration, Srinagar for taking concerted efforts to fight against the drug menace and its Peddling in the District. She said School Education Department will leave no stone unturned in eliminating Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in District Srinagar.
Later the dignitaries distributed Certificates and trophies among the participants.
