SRINAGAR: Director National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Sehgal on Monday delivered expert talk on ‘Tribology of Biomaterials’ during a weeklong workshop at Punjab Engineering College (PEC) Chandigarh.
The workshop was organized by the Department of Production and Industrial Engineering PEC. It was funded by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department Of Science And Technology, Government of India under Accelerate Vigyan Scheme.
Prof. Sehgal was ‘Guest of Honor’ on the occasion. The workshop was also attended by PEC Director Baldev Setia and Department Head Ravinderjit Singh Walia.
In his key address, Director NIT Srinagar Prof. Sehgal said in the context of biomaterials, Tribology is an important area of research that focuses on the performance of materials used for biomedical applications, such as joint replacements, dental implants, and cardiovascular devices.
“Tribology of biomaterials is a complex field that involves the interplay of various factors, such as the properties of the biomaterials, the nature of the surrounding tissue, and the lubrication conditions,” he said.
Prof. Sehgal said researchers in the field of tribology of biomaterials use a range of techniques to investigate these factors, including wear testing, surface analysis, and computational modeling.
“By gaining a better understanding of the tribological behavior of biomaterials, researchers can design and develop more effective and durable biomedical devices,” he said.
“It plays a very important role in improving the design and making successful biomaterials for medical purposes. Joints of the human body, such as hip, knee, jaw, dental parts etc,” Prof. Sehgal said.
Director NIT Srinagar also appreciated the organizers for organizing the workshop on relevant topics. He said circular economy (CE) aims at reducing resource consumption and eliminating waste while promising economic development continuity
The proposed workshop was designed in line with “Karyashala” initiative of Accelerate Vigyan of SERB-DST to provide information on the fundamentals, current trends, and problems in the area of smart manufacturing technologies and circular economy.
The workshop will provide hands-on training on state-of-the-art concepts like Additive Manufacturing, CNC Machining, Case studies on the circular economy, SCM, Leadership, etc.
