Death toll in Bikaner-Guwahati train accident rises to 9

New Delhi: The death toll in Thursday’s train accident near Mainaguri in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal rose to nine with three more people succumbing to their injuries.

Six of the deceased have been identified as Lalu Kumar (56), Chiranjit Barman (23), Sahida Khatun (17), Subhesh Roy (38), Suman Dey (36) and Shantadevi Pain.

The remaining three bodies, which included a woman, could not be identified.

Eastern Railway also provided a list of 36 injured people, including seven women passengers, who have been admitted to various hospitals in Jalpaiguri. Of the 36, injuries of at least 10 passengers have been categorised as “grievous”.

The accident took place as 12 coaches of the 15633 Bikaner Express (heading towards Guwahati having left Bikaner on Wednesday) derailed between New Domahani and New Mainaguri stations in New Jaipaiguri-New Coochbehar double line electrified section of Alipurduar division of NF Railway on Thursday evening.

The affected coaches – the first 12 cars starting from the engine – consisted of one SLRD (second class luggage rake for disabled), one general compartment and 10 sleeper coaches.
