CSIR’s 1st woman Director-General gets 2-year extension

NEW DELHI: The first woman Director-General of India’s premiere research conglomerate the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research N Kalaisevi has received a two-year extension in the position.

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet chaired by prime minister Narendra Modi approved the extension for two years until 2026.

Kalaisevi will also be secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

Born in Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu Kalaiselvi made history by becoming the first woman DG of CSIR in 80 years in 2022.

She leads a network of 38 labs and 4,500 scientists.

Kalaiselvi is known for her expertise in electrochemical science, particularly in lithium-ion batteries.

She is yet another top leader PM Modi has chosen to retain in his third term in office signalling continuity of policy and approach in science and research.
