NEW DELHI: Harshwardhan Sapkal has been appointed as the new Maharashtra chief of the Congress party, replacing Nana Patole.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has appointed Harshwardhan Sapkal as the president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), effective immediately.

The party has thanked its outgoing President, Nana Patole, for his contributions and leadership during his tenure.

The Congress president has also approved the appointment of Vijay Namdevrao Wadettiwar as the leader of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) in Maharashtra.

Sapkal served as an MLA from 2014 to 2019, representing the Buldhana Assembly Constituency in Maharashtra.

“The Congress president has appointed Harshwardhan Sapkal as the president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect,” Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said in a statement.

“The party appreciates the contributions of the outgoing president Nana Patole,” the statement by Venugopal added. Patole had resigned after the party’s defeat in the Maharashtra Assembly election, where the Maha Vikas Aghadi failed to form a government and lost decisively to the ruling Mahayuti alliance of the BJP.
