Chess Olympiad Torch Relay launched by PM reaches Srinagar

SRINAGAR: The first-ever “Chess Olympiad Torch Relay” launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 19 at the Indira Gandhi International Stadium in New Delhi reached its 3rd destination in Srinagar on Tuesday.

The Torch Relay of the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad was received by Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz in presence of other senior officers.

Starting from the National capital, the historic Olympiad Torch Relay will travel 75 Cities across the Country before reaching its destination-Mahabalipuram on July 27. 

The 44th Chess Olympiad with record participation of 188 countries will be held in Chennai from July 28 to August 10, 2022.

Speaking with regard to the event, the Deputy Commissioner said that for the first-time ever, a torch relay is being held for an event like the Chess Olympiad. He said it is a historic moment not only for those who are professionally associated with Chess, but for all the sports lovers. 

He further said that it is a matter of great honour and pride that Srinagar has been chosen as a transit city for the journey of Olympiad Torch Relay. It will definitely inspire the young Chess players and enthusiasts, Aijaz added.
