NEW DELHI: The suspense over Delhi’s next Chief Minister will finally end on Wednesday as the BJP convenes its legislature party meeting to decide on its leader, 10 days after its resounding victory in the Assembly elections.
According to party sources, the meeting is scheduled for 6 pm on Wednesday, following which the name of the new CM will be formally announced.
The swearing-in ceremony is set for February 20 at 4.30 pm at the iconic Ramlila Maidan, with top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states, expected to attend.
Preparations for the event are in full swing, with BJP MP Yogendra Chandolia calling it a “historic moment” as the party forms its government in Delhi after 27 years. The guest list is expected to include over 50 film stars, industrialists, diplomats and prominent spiritual leaders like Baba Ramdev, Swami Chidananda and Baba Bageshwar Dhirendra Shastri. Musical performances by renowned artists, including singer Kailash Kher, are also likely to be part of the celebrations.
In a significant political move, BJP leaders have hinted that AAP leaders, including ex-CM Arvind Kejriwal, may also be invited to the swearing-in ceremony.
While the BJP has yet to reveal its choice, names such as Parvesh Verma, Vijender Gupta and Satish Upadhyay are being speculated. Party insiders suggest that the leadership selection will strike a balance between experience and youth while ensuring representation from key caste and community groups in the capital.
With the final decision set to be announced tomorrow, Delhi awaits its new CM in what promises to be a politically significant transition.
