Mathematics Day celebrated at KU’s South Campus

Srinagar: The Department of Mathematics at South Campus of the University of Kashmir celebrated the National Mathematics Day-2022 as the final event of its collaborative month-long ‘Popularisation of Mathematics’ programme.  

The awareness-cum-outreach programme was held in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, Jammu and Kashmir.

Director South Kashmir Dr Mukhtar A Khanday highlighted the contributions of great Indian mathematician, S. Ramanujan, and said that poverty and struggle didn’t stop Ramanujan from achieving the real goal of his life.

“Students should draw inspiration from the contributions of S. Ramanujan,” he said, calling for “propagating positivity” about Mathematics in the society to improve enrollment of students in the subject.

Dr Faroz Ahmad Bhat, Programme Convener, welcomed the guests and conducted the proceedings of the programme.

Dr Shailesh Shirali, Director, Sahydri School, Pune was an invited speaker who delivered an online talk on “Applications of Euler formula in Graph theory”.

In the last session, a mathematics quiz was organised for college students. The participating students from Govt Degree College (Boys), Anantnag and Govt College for Women Anantnag secured the first and second positions, respectively, and were later felicitated with books and certificates by the Director, South Campus.

Dr M Iqbal Bhat, Dr M Ibrahim Mir, Dr Firdous Ahmad Shah and Dr Sajad Ahmad Parray, besides scholars of various departments were present.

Sajad Ahmad Sheikh proposed the vote of thanks.

Notably, the month-long programme was conducted from December 7, 2022, at Govt Boys Higher Secondary School Srigufwara Anantnag; Govt Boys Model School Anantnag; Govt Higher Secondary School Zainapora, Shopian; Govt Girls Higher Secondary School Rainawari, Srinagar; Govt Boys Higher Secondary School Sopore, Baramulla, and Govt Boys Degree College, Pulwama.
