Day aimed to encourage integration of specially-abled people in every aspect of social, political, and cultural life: DC Srinagar
SRINAGAR: To mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the District Administration Srinagar organized a function at Abhinandana Home, Solina here, today.
The programme with a global theme for this year, ‘Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future’ was hosted by the District Social Welfare Office in collaboration with the Commissionerate of Person with Disabilities.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Dr Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat was the chief guest on the occasion, while Commissioner for Person with Disabilities, Mohammad Iqbal Lone attended the function as guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, the DC said that the day recognizes the important role that persons with disabilities play in creating a more inclusive and sustainable world for all. He outlined that the day is also aimed to encourage integration of specially-abled people in every aspect of social, political and cultural life.
He underscored that several initiatives have been taken by the Government to address the needs and aspirations of PwDs, besides to honor and empower them. He highlighted different welfare schemes and programmes launched for the socio-economic upliftment of persons with disabilities.
Dr Bilal also held a detailed interaction with the staff and management. He interacted with the PWDs to encourage and boost their morale and confidence. He also stressed the concerned Staff to work with added zeal and dedication besides treating the students in a compassionate manner.
In his address, Dr. Bilal announced on-the-spot admission to a vocational training program and College admission to 12th-pass students.
During the programme, the Deputy Commissioner also felicitated the Distinction Holders and other beneficiaries with Appreciation Certificates and Prosthetic Aids.
Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, detailed the implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016 and the J&K RPWD Rules, 2021, while also addressing the resolution of grievances registered through the Commissioner’s Office.
The event provided a comprehensive overview of achievements in key areas such as Unique Disability ID (UDID)-Enabling centralized identification and benefits for PwDs, Social Security-Expanding financial and community support, Health, Education and Improving infrastructure and mobility for PwDs. The inclusive leadership and strategies to advance disability rights in Jammu and Kashmir were also deliberated during the event.
