WASHINGTON: Facing questions on its alleged role in the ouster of Shiekh Hasina as Bangladesh PM, the White House said these were rumours and said all such reports were false.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, answering specific questions on the matter, said, “We have no involvement at all. Any reports or rumours that the US government was involved in these events is simply false. We believe that the Bangladesh people should determine the future of their government, and that’s where we stand.”

On minorities, especially the Hindu community, facing repression in Bangladesh, she said, “We are monitoring the situation. When it comes to any human rights issues, the President (Joe Biden) is always has been very consistent in speaking loud and clear.”
