SHOPIAN: On the occasion of ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking,’ multifarious activities and events were held across Shopian district, with the aim to create awareness on the menace of Drug Abuse and Trafficking.
This year the theme of the day was ‘The Evidence is Clear, Invest in Prevention.’
At district level, seminar cum rally was organised by Drug Control Organisation Shopian in collaboration with Chemists and Distributors Association.
The rally started from District Hospital, traversed through the main market of town and culminated at Gool Chowk. Prominent citizens, youth, members of chemists and distributors association and police department participated in the rally.
During the program pamphlets and posters depicting the message of ill effects of drug abuse were distributed among the youth and general public. Banners and hoardings were displayed and slogans were raised against the drug menace during the Rally.
Later an anti-drug pledge was taken by all the participants of the rally at Gool Chowk Shopian.
Similarly, the Department of Education and Social Welfare organised events at DIET Shopian where a large number of students and other concerned stakeholders participated in pledge, seminars and rally.
Besides, a large gathering of students, officers of departments also participated in the events and highlighted the importance of concrete action at all levels to contain the spread of the drug menace. Magnitude of the drug problem was stressed upon and students were impressed to act as messengers in the community against its hazardous effects.
Elsewhere, across the district, government departments and educational institutions also took out rallies and conducted awareness campaigns against Drug Abuse.
