Website to Showcase the Rich Cultural Heritage of Kashmir: Dr Sehrish

BARAMULLA: In order to provide an ethnographic lens into the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir valley and ensure access of people to ancient ornaments, coins, traditional dresses and utensils, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar today launched Meeras Mahal Museum Website www.meerasmahalmuseum.com. to showcase the best representatives of the total collections.

After inaugurating the website, Dr Sehrish highlighted the importance of the Meeras Mahal Museum established at Sopore and said that the establishment of Museum is a step towards preserving heritage of the said area. 

She said that the website aims at spreading awareness about Kashmir’s ethnic culture, especially from the hinterland, to not just the local community but also the global audience and the diaspora.

It is worth mentioning here that Meeras Mahal was set up by Atiqa Bano, a renowned educationist of Kashmir in 2001. The museum today has over 7000 items to display. The museum houses a collection of ancient ornaments, coins, traditional dresses, and utensils.

Speaking on the occasion, the DC said that the objects have a huge cultural and heritage value as they depict a lifestyle and living pattern of a region.

Dr Sehrish said that the museum has been used by the local population to get an understanding of the life and times of their immediate ancestors. The Museum contains relevant artifacts that local communities can connect with as it gives them first-hand information of their vernacular past, the DC added.
