CUKashmir’s SLS holds prog on ‘New Criminal Laws’

GANDERBAL: Department of Law, School of Legal Studies (SLS), Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) organized an orientation programme on “New Criminal Laws,” which emphasized the importance of recent legislative developments in the country.

The event provided insights into the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNSS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) Acts of 2023.

The experts discussed threadbare about new provisions of criminal law like targeting mob lynching, snatching, organized crimes, terrorist acts etc. The speakers welcomed the enactment of new criminal laws as a significant milestone in both criminal law jurisprudence and the broader criminal justice system.

Dean SLS and Head Deptt. of Law, Prof. (Dr) Farooq A. Mir, expressed optimism that these laws would not only infuse Indian values into the justice delivery system, but also fulfil the long-awaited promise of effective justice for all stakeholders.

Dr. Hilal discussed the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 and elaborated its objectives and significance in modernizing the Indian legal system. He delved into newly defined offenses and penalties that have been revised under the updated legislation. Community service and the implementation of gender-neutral laws were key highlights of his presentation.

Dr. Mudassir Bhat focussed on BNSS 2023, its provisions related to ensuring the safety and security of citizens. He discussed the streamlined magisterial system, the requirement for mandatory forensic investigation, and the implementation of electronic trials.

About BSA, 2023, Kingal Bagdi emphasized its significance in enhancing the evidentiary framework in legal proceedings. She spoke about the admissibility of evidence, handling of police confessions, and the proper presentation of evidence to ensure a fair trial process.

The sessions were followed by the Q & A session.
